Peppol eInvoicing, BAS and GST: delivery and confirmation notices for Australian business

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) administers GST, Business Activity Statements (BAS) and the Australian Peppol eInvoicing network. 4notify integrates with Australian accounting software (MYOB, Xero) and delivers receipt acknowledgements, Peppol validation status reports and BAS lodgement reminders — with seven-year retention aligned with ATO record-keeping rules.

Preamble

Section 1 — Pursuant to A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999 (Cth), Part VA of the Taxation Administration Act 1953 and the ATO's adoption of the Peppol eInvoicing framework, this Gazette is issued in respect of the delivery of eInvoicing acknowledgements and BAS lodgement notices.

Legislative basis
A New Tax System (GST) Act 1999 (Cth)

Legal basis for GST, tax invoices and the BAS reporting cycle.

Taxation Administration Act 1953 — record-keeping

Five-to-seven-year retention of business records and electronic documents.

Peppol eInvoicing framework (ATO)

Australia's adoption of the international Peppol BIS for B2B and B2G eInvoicing.

Implementation
01

MYOB / Xero webhook

4notify subscribes to the eInvoicing queue in your accounting software; documents are validated before they are dispatched to the Peppol access point.

02

Receipt acknowledgement + validation report

Receipt acknowledgement within 60 seconds to the sender; validation status (accepted / business-rule warning / rejected) follows within 5 minutes.

03

Routing to the registered tax agent

Acknowledgements are routed to the relevant BAS or tax agent by ABN, so the lodging party is notified.

04

Seven-year retention (TAA 1953)

Every invoice and acknowledgement is retained with a hash signature for seven years — aligned with ATO record-keeping obligations.

Frequently asked questions
Does 4notify need an ATO API key?

No. 4notify works from the delivery envelopes produced by your accounting software; the Peppol access-point connection stays with your provider.

What is the difference between eInvoicing and emailing a PDF?

Peppol eInvoicing exchanges a structured invoice directly between accounting systems via access points. 4notify handles the acknowledgement, validation report and agent notification around that exchange.
